'sex' on American stamp
Just a few days ago, we expressed our concern for the reactions on the Warhol stamp, which will be issued in August by the USPS, the American post services. Our fear was due to the quite unusual, modern look of the stamp.
But we are probably worrying needlessly. A stamp which will be issued a few days later (the issue is dedicated to the comic poet Ogden Nash) even goes a bit further. The fact that there will be a limerick on an American stamp for the first time is nice but not exactly shocking. That this limerick contains the word "sex" might be slightly less usual for an American. It is something new anyhow.
The daring word has got to do with something innocent, namey the difficult sexing of turtles, and not with man's urge for reproduction. For those who disbelieve, here is the literal text of "The Turtle", the little poem which, together with other limericks, is placed on the background of the stamp:
The turtle lives 'twixt plated decks
Which practically conceals its sex.
I think it clever of the turtle
In such a fix to be so furtile.
