Prince Bernard honoured with WWF issue
TV, teletext and newspapers report on the fact that pictures from the private archives of the Dutch Prince Bernard have been used for a Mozambican stamp issue.
And it’s true: the prince is featured on four beautiful pictures which are on a sheet of the African country involved. However, they cannot be seen as stamps, as the prince’s pictures have been placed on vignettes, next to the ‘real’ stamps with pictures of elephants on them.
The sheet has the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) logo, the organisation which is being supported by Prince Bernard for such a long time already. With the sheet, Mozambique wishes to honour the the prince and the mass of good things he has done on behalf of the WWF. A year ago, the prince was given a 200 000 dollar cheque on the part of the approx. 750 000 contributors to the WWF on the occasion his 90th birthday. The prince invested the money in the Great Limpo Transfrontier Park, of which he was one of the initiators. This park is, amongst others, the new home to about 1000 elephants. The new park has also boosted the economy of Mozambique, which is a poor country. To thank the prince and the WWF for that, the country issued the sheet featured underneath.
