“Huerfanos de Correos”
Every collector that has come across a Spanish collection knows them and is puzzled about them.
These Spanish issues are quite controversial. The charity vignettes (not to be mistaken for charity stamps, of course) are appreciated and enlisted in teh catalogue, although they aren’t stamps at all!
Especially these vignettes are a peculiar thing for collectors, because the world catalogues don’t mention them.
Still, they are worth collecting because they are undoubtedly official issues of which the first series was already issued in 1934 and consisted of 8 values.
The most famous of the charity vignettes, which are also known as overprint stamps from Spanish Andorra and the Spanish colonies, and were issued under the name “The history of the post” in 1938. It is a series of 6 values printed by Waterlow and Sons in London.
Although all of these vignettes have a value indication, none of them has got a stamp value. Spanish philatelists know them as the “Huerfanos de Correos” (the Orphans of the Post).
On the occasion of the 90 anniversary of the telegraph, there was an issue of support vignettes which show a device and the portray of Hughes, the inventor.
