‘War’ because of peace stamp
Why did the UN postal administration (UNPA) change the design of a stamp by a new design? ‘A mistake’, UNPA says. ‘Because of Chinese pressure’, the Taiwanese say.
However, the publicity for the initial series My Dream for Peace One Day (release data: September 21st) was started already when the UNPA suddenly announced that one of the stamps, designed by the 13-year old Chi-Yah Yang from Taiwan, would be changed by a stamp designed by Amanda Nunez from Belize, 13 years old as well. 'We made a mistake in compsing the result of our contest’ UNPA explains. ‘And because of that, we almost released a stamp with the wrong design.' In that case, Chi-Yah’s design would have been sacrificed because of political hypersensivity.
Now, the case is that the design of the young Taiwanese contains a number of little flags, among which the Taiwanese. This would be hard for the People’s Republic to take. UNPA, that strifes for peace on earth with this series, would have given in, which resulted in the withdrawal of the stamp. Taiwan is so upset about this that it is now examined whether or not the stamp concerned could be issued as a Taiwanese stamp. But therefore UNPA would have to give its approval...
