Rheinstein stamps : price increased
The sheet carrying 100 German one-Reichsmark stamps, the so-called Burg-Rheinstein stamp, which was recently described on this site, was sold for £120.000.
The small bunch of people which gathered in a Spink auction room (London) on December 14, under which one person who especially came from Germany, had to have a little patience first. The auction, which was about to start at 2,30 pm, didn’t start before 3 pm. It was the auctioneer, Nick Startup, who announced that the owner had urged to raise the starting price from £95.000 to £115.000 which meant that the first real opening bid should be 120.000. Mary Weeks, a Spink commissionary was willing to pay that sum. Afterwards, neither those present, under which the German, nor those connected telephonically with the auctioneering room wanted to pay more. Thus, the hammer came down at £120.000 but Spink refused to reveal the buyer’s identity. Article by Otto Hornung, London.
